Arnold Schwarzenegger Provides a Sombre Update on the Twins Sequel, Triplets

Global icon Arnold Schwarzenegger has provided a somewhat melancholy update regarding the development of Twins sequel, Triplets. While appearing at the Arnold Sports Festival (via TheArnoldFans), Schwarzenegger, who is due to star in Triplets alongside Danny DeVito and Tracy Morgan, revealed that they are slowly searching for a new filmmaker to direct the comedy sequel following the passing of Ivan Reitman.

“We had a little setback because the man that was supposed to direct it, who directed the first one, Ivan Reitman, had passed away. We’re going to wait a little bit until this whole thing cools down, and then we’re going to readdress it. But that’s a project that’s supposed to film in October, but we just have to now look into a different director, and see if we are going to continue with this project.”

Beloved director Ivan Reitman, who directed Twins back in 1988, was set to return for Triplets alongside stars Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito. Sadly, the filmmaker passed away in his sleep at his home in Montecito, California, earlier this year on February 12, 2022, at the age of 75.

Based on Schwarzenegger’s update, it sounds like development on Triplets has halted while the studio looks for a new director. While the actor does state that filming is due to begin in October, he makes it quite clear that, if the right director for Triplets cannot be found, the project will not go ahead. This is sure to come as some disappointment to fans of Twins, who have waited decades for the sequel to be born. But, following the untimely death of Ivan Reitman, it is of course understandable that Schwarzenegger and everyone else involved want to do Triplets right or not at all.

Triplets Will Introduce Tracy Morgan as a Third Sibling
While there had been whispers for some time, a sequel to Twins, which follows unlikely fraternal twin brothers played by Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito who were separated at birth, was first announced officially back in 2012 before finding real traction last year. The late, great Ivan Reitman revealed several details of the story for the follow-up saying, “Secretly, there was a third baby born, a Black baby, who hasn’t been in touch with his siblings,” Reitman explained about Morgan’s character, who was initially due to be portrayed by Eddie Murphy.

“They don’t know each other and very early in the movie they meet and it’s how they achieve a bond together after all these years,” he continued. “It’s really a film about family and, no matter how different we all are, we have to learn to get along. These guys have great chemistry together, and you can see that in the reel, and how much energy they bring out in each other.”

Should the studio find the right director to take over from Ivan Reitman, Triplets will shoot in Boston, with a script written by Dylan Dawson and Lucas Kavner. Do you think that Triplets should still go ahead, or should the project now be shelved following Ivan Reitman’s death?
